The Project CATE Foundation, Inc. and the Alabama Coastal Foundation once again came together to sponsor the 7th annual 2008 Coastal Kids Quiz which took place on April 29. This competition is held for 5th grade students and their teachers who are interested in conservation and the environment. Teams of five students (team of four, one alternate) from public and private schools in Mobile and Baldwin Counties are encouraged to enter. The competition quiz program uses the Ribbit's Big Splash CD-Rom as its base curriculum. This CD-Rom teaches students about water through investigating ponds, rivers, wetlands, and the Gulf Coast. Other study materials will be included. All questions will be taken from the materials and Alabama Course of Study: Science standards for 5th grade. The Coastal Kids Quiz is a round robin, question-and-answer competition played between two teams of four players. Each game will be made up of two periods. In the First period, there will be a set time period with toss-up questions that either team can answer and also bonus questions. Points will be totaled at the end of each round. After the two periods, the winning team will advance to the next round and compete against another team. All participants will receive prizes and the first three place winning teams will receive contributions towards a college savings program. Students (all five) on the first place team will receive $300 bonds. Second place team members will receive $200 bonds and third place team members will receive $100 bonds. The teachers for all three places will receive $500 each to use for conservation activities in the classroom.
