The Bicycle Safety Campaign is a major part of the Livable Communities Coalition's effort to make coastal Alabama a better place to live, work, and play.
With the local increased interest in cycling, there is a corresponding need to increase bicycle safety awareness and understanding. To that end, the Coalition--through an AARP of Alabama grant-- provided a free training to help educate local law enforcement officers to strengthen and reinforce state and local laws related to bicycle safety.
The training had a total of 17 officers attend representing 16 different counties including: Bayou La Batre, Dauphin Island, City of Mobile, Prichard, Saraland, Satsuma, Semmes, Bay Minette, Fairhope, Elberta, Foley, Gulf Shores, Loxley, Orange Beach, and Daphne.
After this training officers are asked that they share what they learned and train their fellow officers. The training was conducted by Les Leathem, an avid and experienced cyclist and is the founder and President of THESE GUYS, LLC. He is a coach for the League of American Bicyclists and teaches experienced cyclists nationwide who wish to become League Cycling Instructors. Below are some photos of the training both the in-class portion and the on-bike clinic!
